My students inspire me!
I work with students that are grade levels behind in Orange, NJ. I want to help students feel more comfortable and confident by learning math organically through projects and comprehend that math is required to manage finances for life’s big decisions and support their dreams to be chefs, incredible athletes, and CEOs of their businesses. The experiences I create give students a real feel for future career possibilities.
Helping students to be part of a team is essential.
Social-emotional learning is an essential component in our classroom and creates a safe place to share ideas, goals, and work as a team. My plans incorporate community, collaboration, and contribution with real-world applications. When students planned the field trip, they were engaged, their interest was piqued, and they eagerly sought answers. They brainstormed fundraising ideas, created a “marketplace”, and are currently raising money for the trip.
Working with students is such an awesome experience.
It’s truly exciting and fun to collaborate with students and emphasizes the importance of flexibility and thinking on one’s feet. The 6th graders see that I respect their ideas, I am learning from them, and I am willing to use time and resources to support their work. When they think outside the box and are creative, we all feel a sense of excitement about the work and the outcomes. The message is we are all human beings, and despite age differences, we all need to work together and can learn from each other.
Students deserve a seat at the table. We can meet students' needs better if we can hear what they need FROM their lived experiences and perspectives.
Providing students with opportunities to learn by doing helps students to learn more and apply their knowledge and skills immediately and in the future.
Communication practice and experience will prepare students to be skillful negotiators, managers and advocates.
When students participate in project-based learning, their interest and engagement are ignited. They set goals, envision outcomes, and work hard, adjusting as they celebrate wins and solve problems.
Older students naturally model the use of math for students across the school, sharing their experiences, and selling products at a discounted rate that is affordable to their peers.
Project learning creates a ripple effect of collaboration, goodwill, and pride across the school community. Our 6th graders are interacting with staff in new ways and connecting with students in all grades.
We can learn as much from children as we can teach them - I am not afraid to say I don't know, apologize when needed, and have a student soar beyond me in their knowledge. It is immensely gratifying to see my students succeed!
